The Leopold community and strangers have rallied around a local boy whose bike was destroyed in a car crash.

Jamie from Leopold this week took possession of a “fast” mountain bike and accessories after donations from the Leopold Lions and the Leopold Men’s Shed.

He’s already had an opportunity to zip and “cruise” along the Bellarine Rail Trail and down to the local primary school with his mates.

“The new bike is so much faster, I’ve got a speedometer on it and I’ve been up to about 20-25km/h,” Jamie said.

“My old bike was a bit sluggish.”

Jamie is now looking forward to the opportunity to go mountain bike riding in Lorne, and riding out to Queenscliff and Geelong with his dad.

Jamie, who was flung about 3m in the air after he was allegedly hit by a driver while riding his old bike, sent a warning to his peers to wear a helmet while out on their bikes.

“That’s what saved his life.” his mum, Jane, said.

Jane said the family were extremely thankful to the community who had supported them with well wishes after the incident earlier this month.

She said the community generosity that flowed following the incident showed good was still able to prevail in a time of distress.

“We are extremely appreciative of the community they’ve proved that good can come out of this time.”

Leopold Lions member Trevor Frost said the community was moved by the experiences of Jamie and wanted to help.

“We wanted to lift him back up again after a difficult time and show him there is a lot of good in the community still,” he said.

Mr Frost said the donation of the bike included a new helmet, lights and a bike pump, and cost $1200 overall.

He said the donation of the bike to Jamie was possible following donations from Silvio’s Pizza and Pasta, Opsy’s fish and chips, and Leopold Trailer Repairs.
