A MOTHER whose baby boy died in a Sydney hospital has broken down as she described his final moments.
Clutching a teddy bear and wearing a badge with a picture of her smiling son Kyran, Naomi Day told a coronial inquest into the six-month-old’s death that he was unusually subdued and couldn’t hold his head up two days before he died.
“His eyes were half open but he wasn’t responsive,” she said. Kyran was diagnosed with gastroenteritis on the evening of October 19, 2013 and died at Sydney Children’s Hospital from hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy three days later.
“I turned to Kyran and his eyes rolled back, his mouth was open. I started screaming at the ambulance officer something was seriously wrong,” she said.
Mrs Day told the inquest she was critical of the nurse who first treated Kyran.
“She just seemed like she didn’t care. She was all over the shop,” she said.
The morning after he was admitted, Mrs Day became concerned he was still vomiting, reported The Daily Telegraph.
“No one seemed to come. No one seemed to think it was an urgent situation.”
Kyran was initially taken to Shoalhaven Hospital and the inquest is examining the actions of doctors, nurses and paramedics involved. Grant Day, Kyran’s father, gave evidence briefly, and said the family had taken notes of what happened.
“We knew there was something very, very wrong with what happened,” he said.
Kyran’s grandmother Jane Carritt, who is also a nurse with 20 years experience, told the inquest a few things about the diagnosis of gastroenteritis “stood out.” Kyran wasn’t displaying any of the usual symptoms — high temperature, diarrhoea and vomiting.
“It seemed very odd,” Ms Carritt said, becoming emotional at times.
When she later saw her grandson “glassy-eyed” and “unresponsive” she became greatly concerned.
“Oh my god. This kid’s in trouble,” she told the inquest.
The inquest continues with Toby Greenacre, a paediatrician who treated Kyran at Shoalhaven, expected to give evidence on Wednesday.
The nurses and paramedics involved are expected to appear at the inquest later this week.
