Aussie music royalty Kylie Minogue has rocked an A-list gathering to celebrate the 100th birthday of another of the country’s best known exports – Qantas.
Before a star-studded crowd at Sydney Airport on Friday night, that included Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and ex-Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, Kylie belted out a series of her signature tunes and iconic Australian numbers including On a Night Like This.
As the famous airline rang in a centenary of existence, another global pop star Tones and I also performed before the rapturous crowd at the black tie bash.
The blue chip event was hosted inside a decorated hangar at Charles Kingsford Smith Airport in Sydney, the home base of the carrier, with one of Qantas’ iconic jets as a special guest of honour.
“How good is it to be dining under the wing of an A380?” Qantas boss Alan Joyce said during his speech.
Dressed in a super-stylish, almost space age lavender jumpsuit, perhaps in a nod to the theme of the evening, Kylie also belted out the cult Australian tune I Still Call Australia Home.
“It’s such an emotional song,” said the pop superstar who is based in London.
Mr Albanese’s speech spoke of Qantas’ alignment with Australia’s national character.
“There is probably no other Australian company whose logo stirs the emotions quite like the sight of the flying kangaroo on a Boeing 737,” he said.
“And there are very few organisations that project Australia’s character and qualities to the world in the way Qantas does. Whether you’re a tourist visiting our beautiful country, or an Aussie returning home, boarding a Qantas flight is that moment of connection with the warmth and humour of Australia.”
Other attendees included ex-PM, Scott Morrison, Macquarie Bank boss Shemara Wikramanayake, Nationals Party leader David Littleproud, billionaires Gina Rhinehart and Lindsay Fox, ex—AFL star Adam Goodes, actors Hugh Sheridan and Rodger Corser , celebrity chefs Maggie Beer and Neil Perry and media personalities including David Koch, Chris Bath and Jim Wilson.
Qantas, originally know as Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services, was founded in November 1920.
It is the second oldest airline still in operation after Dutch carrier KLM which was founded the previous year.
