Jenny Morrison can name bread, milk prices, says Liberal Minister Stuart Robert

The Prime Minister’s colleague has argued that Jenny Morrison would have been able to answer a “gotcha” question on the price of bread and milk.

If Prime Minister Scott Morrison had his wife Jenny by his side when asked to name the cost of bread and milk, she’d have been able to “rattle off” the prices, his colleague has argued.

Employment Minister Stuart Robert has defended Mr Morrison’s response to the “gotcha” question at the National Press Club this week, saying his inability to name the price of bread, milk, petrol or a rapid antigen test (RAT) on the spot did not mean he was out of touch.

“From the prime minister’s point of view if he’d sat there and Jen was with him, she’d be able to rattle off all the prices of all the things they buy,” Mr Robert said.

“I’m sure they have that conversation as all families do, my wife and I certainly do.”

Mr Robert said Mr Morrison was “well and truly in touch” because he “travels regularly” around Australia.

“The Prime Minister is extraordinarily in touch with the issues of every day Australians,” he said.

Mr Morrison also clarified his first response to the question, having initially told reporters he “wasn’t going to pretend” he goes out and buys bread and milk.

“To be honest, I heard bread and milk in the question yesterday, it was a pretty robust and torrid time at the press club. I must admit I didn’t hear the question about RATs,” he said.

“(The price) of RATs is about $15 to $20 and they can be less than that … if it gets above that they will be coming after those who are price gouging.”

Mr Morrison said the cost of bread and milk also depended on the type, adding it would be “two, three bucks” on average.

“Little milk comes from a cow anymore, there are so many different things that people have available,” he said.

“You can get petrol for $1.60 to $1.80, that’s what it is.”
