Police in Sydney are still on the hunt for a gunman who shot a man near a two-year-old’s birthday party on Sunday afternoon.
The incident unfolded at 2.40pm on Sunday afternoon outside a home on Bletchley Place in Hebersham, in the city’s west. Police believe it was a targeted attack.
A 39-year-old man was shot multiple times and underwent surgery on Sunday at Westmead Hospital. Five paramedic crews and a specialist medical team in a rescue helicopter were dispatched to the scene.
Speaking to Nine News, the father hosting the nearby birthday party said he believes he saw the alleged gunman who he said was driving a silver four wheel drive.
“I heard the first two shots and I jumped up on the fence to see what was going on,” said Damien, the child’s father.
“And I’ve seen someone lean out the [car] window with a shotgun and firing at the guy laying on the ground.
“We got everyone inside. I then went to come out of the gate and realised they were still there.”
Damien said the injured man had suffered multiple gunshot wounds in his arms, legs and head.
“When I went down there he had holes all through him, all through his arms, legs, even one in his head.”
NSW Ambulance Inspector Kevin McSweeney said the victim suffered two gunshot wounds, “one to his right shoulder and one to his left leg”.
“Paramedics worked to stabilise the patient, who had suffered significant blood loss before transporting him to Westmead Hospital for further treatment,” he said.
As of Monday morning, police are still making inquiries into the identity of the gunman.
