Gold Coast City Council extends flexi-bin service trial

Gold Coast city council plans to extend the trial of the popular bulk kerbside collection bins in the city’s northern suburbs.

Say goodbye to 'single-use'

THE council is to extend its trial of the popular bulk kerbside collection bins to the Gold Coast’s northern suburbs.

The blue coloured flexi-skip bins have been a huge success in Divisions 8 to 14 since the initial trial began in February.

But councillors want to see the reaction in the Coast’s other divisions before they become a permanent fixture and contractors are signed up for a long term deal.

In late April a report in The Bulletin detailed how 5060 requests had been made for the service with 1459 collections as homeowners isolating on their properties during COVID-19 restrictions undertook more renovation works.

Councillors a full council meeting yesterday backed a recommendation that the trial continue, and prior to any changes being introduced another report is considered.

Water, waste and energy committee chair Gail O’Neill said the reason behind extending the trial was to determine if the strong take-up in the service had been due unique circumstances created by the coronavirus restrictions.

“It’s only been in Divisions 8 to 14. This will now include Divisions 1 to 7. It will give us a better idea,” Cr O’Neill said.

“We have had a good take-up with it. It might have been a COVID thing. We’ve had nearly 8000 orders. We have picked up about half of those.”

The trial will be extended from July to December with another report likely in the New Year when a decision is to be made about a permanent service.

Feedback from officers suggest the new service could be a cheaper and more effective option than the traditional kerbside pick-up.
