Fishing in Corio Bay to get easier after three rocky reefs announced

About 100 tonnes of limestone will be dropped into Corio Bay across three locations. So why will it make snagging a bite easier?

ABOUT 100 tonnes of limestone will be dropped into Corio Bay across three locations to boost fish numbers in the bay.

Increasing the likelihood of anglers snagging a bite on the bay will also be the aim of the $700,000 state-government funded project.

Fishing and Boating Minister Melissa Horne said the rocky reefs would be built at Outer Harbour, Kirk Point and St Helens.

“More reefs in the bay means more fish habitat, which is like a housing boom for Corio Bay’s marine life,” Ms Horne said.

“We’re building more fishing infrastructure to make sure Victorian fishers get the best bang for their buck out of their fishing licences.”

Oysters and mussels, considered filters of the bay will be seeded onto the reefs, once they are completed by the end of this year, to encourage other marine life to the area.

Ms Horne said Polaris Marine had been contracted to deliver the project, and that the reefs were likely to be home to King George whiting and squid.

The reef construction will support more than 25 jobs and will require basalt and 100 tonnes of limestone.

Lara MP John Eren said the reefs would encourage fishers to come to Geelong from regional Victoria and Melbourne.

“This project will provide jobs for people working in maritime construction and will be a long-term boost for the region.”
