Labor’s lead over Coalition narrows in two major polls, primary support tied

Polls are rapidly tightening before Saturday’s federal election, with two major surveys raising the possibility of a second come from behind win for the Morrison government.

Liberals still 'have hope' they can get enough votes to 'fall over the line'

Polls are rapidly tightening before Saturday’s federal election, with two major surveys showing support flowing back to the Coalition and raising the possibility of a second come from behind win for the Morrison government.

A Resolve Strategic poll conducted for the Nine newspaper group put the Coalition ahead with the ALP’s primary vote crashing three points to 31 per cent and the Coalition gaining a point since the last survey a fortnight ago.

With preference flows as indicated by those surveyed, Labor came out ahead at 51-49.

According to the latest Roy Morgan survey released Tuesday, Labor’s lead over the Coalition has fallen by six points, suggesting an overall two party preferred result of 53-47 per cent for Anthony Albanese.

While such numbers would still put Labor in power, it also found that both major parties’ primary support was tied at 34 per cent.

The Roy Morgan poll also showed a massive 36 per cent of respondents saying that they were planning to vote for a minor party, an independent, or simply refused to say who they were supporting.

“A strong week of campaigning by Prime Minister Scott Morrison in 2019 garnered a 3.5 per cent swing to the LNP in the last week and an unexpected election victory for the Coalition,” said Michele Levine, CEO of Roy Morgan.

“Morrison will be hoping to repeat the feat this week while ALP Leader Anthony Albanese will be hoping to retain the election-winning lead the Opposition has held all year.”
