AUSTRALIANS have always warmed to beer drinking Prime Ministers. And yesterday Scott Morrison had a can produced in his honour.

While there was no beer in it – Mr Morrison used the opportunity to spruik his economic credentials to the media pack travelling with him.

The Prime Minister visited East Coast Canning in the coastal NSW electorate of Gilmore on Monday, where he spoke about the small business’ success story.

The cannery even pumped out a batch of special federal election souvenir beer cans with “ScoMo’s Strong Economy” emblazoned on the front below a Liberal logo.

Mr Morrison’s media team was eager to hand them out to travelling media in Sydney on Monday afternoon.

Designed in the style of a hoppy beer, the label was made using a cutting-edge printing machine that East Coast Canning bought from Germany with the help of a $1m grant.

On the back of the can reads: “Our economy has a lot of moving parts and a lot of risks. But also many opportunities”.

The label goes on to boast how the federal government “saved around 700,000 jobs” from the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We have achieved the biggest budget turnaround in 70 years with our plan delivering an extra $100bn to the country’s bottom line,” it says.

“Our economic growth is one of the best in the developed world.”

Mr Morrison met with East Coast Canning owners and staff on Monday morning. The business is Australia’s first ever mobile cannery, providing printing services for breweries and distillers.

The Liberal-branded cans were printed as the economy came to the fore on day one of the federal election campaign.

Opposition leader Anthony Albanese was stumped when he was asked two simple questions about the economy.

He was unable to cite the correct unemployment rate – sitting at 4 per cent – and he also could not recall the official Reserve Bank cash rate, which has been steady at 0.1 per cent since November 2020.
