The Liberals have dealt their opponents in Kooyong a savage blow after Teal MP Monique Ryan’s husband was filmed stealing rival candidate Amelia Hamer’s campaign signage.

Dr Ryan’s partner, Peter Jordan, was shown ripping Ms Hamer’s signage off a fence in footage posted to social media on March 24.

The Liberal Party has issued several new signs to accompany Ms Hamer’s existing signage. The new poster reads: “Monique, please DO NOT take this sign!”

Images of the added corflute were shared to the Liberal Party’s official X account, captioned “Monique plz” and “Friendly reminder, Dr Ryan”.

Dr Ryan and Mr Jordan both apologised after the footage went viral last week.

“I unreservedly apologise for removing the sign. It was a mistake,” Mr Jordan said in a statement.

“I believed the sign was illegally placed, but I should have reported my concerns to council.”

Dr Ryan also apologised for the incident in the same statement.

“I apologise for the removal of the sign. It should not have happened,” she said.

“All concerns around signage should be reported to council.”

Both candidates are vying for the vote of the affluent Victorian electorate, which was won by Dr Ryan in 2022.

The Australian Electoral Commission said it did not regulate the placement of political signage in a response to the scandal last week.

“The AEC doesn’t regulate the placement of signage or disagreements over signage placement,” the AEC said.

“Signage on public land is generally a matter for local council.

“While we don’t regulate sign placement, we’re reminding all campaigners of the importance of campaigning respectfully.”
