Scott Morrison admits Coalition ‘not going to be loved’ in 2022 election campaign

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has used a bizarre analogy for the upcoming election in a final rallying cry to his Coalition colleagues.

Federal budget 'delivers' for Australian families: Frydenberg

On the eve of the federal election Prime Minister Scott Morrison has told his Coalition MPs the government is “not going to be loved” by the public, but can still show they’re the best at doing the job.

In his final rallying speech to his partyroom before the election is called, Mr Morrison likened Australians’ choice at the upcoming May poll to a trip to the dentist.

Mr Morrison said when he goes to the dentist he did not “care if he or she is my friend or not,” but that when they’ve “got that drill in their mouth” they “know what they’re doing”.

“That’s what government’s like,” he said to the room.

“We’re not going to be loved.

“We’re out here to do a job for our nation, and it’s an incredible responsibility.

Mr Morrison said the Coalition was the “most competent” form of government to take Australia “forward”.

He said the election was not a “referendum” that was “for or against” the Morrison Government, but a “choice” of who to vote for.

“It’s a pretty dramatic choice,” he said.

“Vastly more important than picking your dentist because you end up picking the future of our nation.”

Treasurer confirms fuel excise slash

The fuel excise excise will be slashed in a “temporary and targeted” way to ease cost-of-living pressure for motorists, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has confirmed.

Without revealing the amount to be cut, Mr Frydenberg said the petrol tax changes would be outlined in his 7.30pm budget speech on Tuesday.

“If you’re a family who needs your car to get to and from work to drop your kids at school, if you’re a tradie is busy getting about a daily job, you are seeing the higher price for petrol and what it’s doing to your take-home pay,” he said.

“And so what we will be seeking to do in this budget is provide cost of living relief for those Australians that are paying higher prices at the bowser.”
