FATHER and son Michael and Joshua Smart did a lot of things together.
They went to the footy together, drank together, went to jail together — and even got shot together.
The pair were outside their housing commission unit in Jones St, Pyrmont, on Sunday night when neighbours heard a woman screaming and then a number of shots.
FROM YESTERDAY: TWO MEN GUNNED DOWN IN PYRMONT
When police arrived soon after, Michael Smart lay on the ground with a bullet in his head. His 23-year-old son Joshua, was next to him, having been shot in the back.
Smart Sr remains in a critical condition in hospital. About 2.30pm yesterday, his son was released from St Vincent’s Hospital, giving media the finger as he was driven to Central Police Station for questioning.
He spent the afternoon at City Central police station where he was last night charged with concealing a serious indictable offence in relation to his shooting.
He was refused bail and is expected to appear before Central Local Court today.
A wannabe boxer, Joshua was released from jail in March last year after serving two years for recklessly causing grievous bodily harm in company. The person he was in company with during the assault was his father, who was released a month later.
“Both persons are known to police. That’s a line of inquiry we’ll be looking at,” Sydney City acting commander Detective Inspector John Maricic said.
“It would appear at this stage that it is a targeted shooting.”
The Smarts are known as a tough inner-city family that have lived in the Pyrmont/ Glebe area for years.
“They are old school guys. But they were not big-time crims. Whatever sparked this seems a bit extreme,’’ a person who knows them said.
The younger Smart fancied himself as a boxer and boasted on Facebook he was training for a fight next month in Queensland: “Back to the gym tomorrow, in may they ain’t no way I'm losing the only way I lose if they take me out the ring in a body bag.”
His father remains in a critical condition in Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
Residents reported hearing up to six shots.
