A direct link between the Little Malop Street hospitality precinct and the waterfront will be opened under a partnership between governments.
Dennys Place in the CBD will be opened between Malop and Little Malop streets following the demolition of the Guf internet cafe building facing Malop Street scheduled for next year.
Tenants of the building will be provided “ongoing support” including a rent waiver as they are helped to move to other Geelong locations.
Victorian Regional Development Minister Jaclyn Symes said the laneway project will help people move easily between Little Malop Street and Malop Street.
“The new laneway will improve pedestrian access for thousands of office workers from WorkSafe and NDIA offices. That’s good news for local businesses along that strip who’ll no doubt be looking to welcome more customers and a boost to business,” Ms Symes said.
The project is part of the $38m revitalisation of central Geelong funded under the City Deal by the state and federal governments and Geelong council.
The deal also includes funding for the next section of the Green Spine, between Gheringhap and Moorabool streets, which will be delivered in the first quarter of 2021.
It will refurbish the entry to Geelong near Johnstone Park and include a landscaped triangle park of trees, grass and seating.
Federal Population, Cities and Urban Infrastructure Minister Alan Tudge said the laneway project was making the region a better place to live.
“The laneway will bring to life a new part of the city which will support new jobs and improve the local economy for emerging and existing businesses,” Mr Tudge said.
“It’s crucial that investments like this one under the City Deal get cracking because Geelong, and Victoria, desperately needs the economic stimulus.”

Geelong MP Christine Couzens said the pandemic had impacted local businesses.
“That is why it’s important we get on with these projects to drive investment into the city, support local construction jobs and help the region bounce back,” Ms Couzens said.
Victoria senator Sarah Henderson said the City Deal will leverage the city’s strengths.
The $370m Geelong City Deal consists of $183.8m from the federal government, $172m from the state government and $14.4m from the Geelong council.
