THE killer of Queensland boy Daniel Morcombe is being allowed to mingle with other prisoners after being kept in isolation for two years.
Brett Peter Cowan was being sheltered from other inmates for his own safety after reports other prisoners were under orders to “bash on sight”.
Seven News revealed last night Cowan, 46, has been taken out of the protective cell at Brisbane’s Wolston Correctional Centre and into a unit where he they believed he would be safe.
Prison staff told Seven News the decision to integrate Cowan was made by his management team, which included psychologists.
Since he has been jailed he has only seen them, a doctor and prison staff.
Cowan has been a “bash on sight” target, with former prisoners telling the Courier Mail inmates were threatened with assault themselves if they didn’t attack Cowan.
The newspaper understood Cowan did not want to leave the protective unit.
He will be able to spend two hours a day in the unit, however he can decline to go. He will have his own shower, toilet and television.
Cowan was found guilty of 13-year-old Daniel’s abduction and murder in March 2014. He was jailed for life with a non-parole period of 20 years.
