Daintree missing man: Search launched for Victorian tourist missing in Far North Queensland crocodile territory

Grave fears are held for a Victorian man who has gone missing in a remote part of the Far North after his car became bogged in a creek that is a known crocodile habitat.

GRAVE fears are held for a Victorian man who has gone missing in a remote part of the Far North after his car became bogged in a creek known for being a crocodile habitat.

Milan Lemic was reported missing by family and has not been heard from for two days.

The 25-year old man’s vehicle became bogged in an area of the CREB track at Baird’s Crossing in the Daintree and a local passer-by offered to return with equipment to tow his vehicle, but when he came back twenty minutes later, the man had vanished.

Police have launched a large-scale search involving a helicopter and land assets.

They are also calling on local farmers and residents to check buildings and other shelters on their properties in case Mr Lemic has taken refuge there.

Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate Milan Lemic, reported missing in the Daintree area since yesterday.

Smithfield Police Senior Sergeant Ed Lukin said police are concerned for the man’s safety.

“There’s no indication he’s injured or a danger to the public at this stage, though there are concerns his behaviour is out of character,” he said.

“He has gone missing before, but never out of the state of Victoria- he has no ties to the area and we don’t believe he’s holidaying here.

“Obviously we can’t discount the fact that some animal interaction may have led to his disappearance, and I’ve liaised with EHP and they’re going to have staff on the river tonight to assess the likelihood of that outcome.”

Mr Lemic is described as having a fair complexion and is 110kg and 191cm tall with dark hair and brown eyes.

He was last seen wearing a bright fluoro singlet, black gym shirt with white writing on it, black tracksuit pants, no shoes and no hat.

Sen-Sgt Lukin said Rescue 510 has surveyed the area and found nothing of interest.

“We’re sending a vehicle up the CREB track and notified police stations in the area,” he said.

“He has been described as anti-social and probably would shun public places.”
