FOREIGN workers won’t be able to apply for as many jobs in Australia under new 457 visa measures being considered by the Turnbull Government.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton confirmed the Government was looking to reduce the number of job categories skilled migrants could apply for under the visas.

It comes after the Government cut the number of days 457 visa holders had to reapply for a visa from 90 to 60.

Speaking on Sky News on Sunday, the Minister said the range of jobs available was expanded “quite dramatically” under the Labor government but he acknowledged the demand for workers was different across the country.

“It is very hard to get people in regional areas,” Mr Dutton said.

“It is a different picture across the country and we need to respond accordingly.”

Mr Dutton announced last week there would be further changes to the visas based on an independent review the Government had launched after taking power.

The changes were about reducing competition for unemployed Australians and protecting temporary visa holders from being exploited, he said.

“The Government values the contribution made by the many skilled persons who work in Australia on 457 visas, but where there is an Australian worker ready, willing and able to perform a role it is the Government’s policy that they have priority,” Mr Dutton said.
