Australia set to pass 80 per cent first dose target

A lottery site for the vaxxed has hit more than half a million entries, only days after the competition was announced.

More than 700,000 Australians that have received at least one dose of the Covid jab have rushed to enter the chance to win a $1m jackpot on Sunday when the Million Dollar Vax lottery went live.

A group of ‘philanthropists and corporations’ called the Million Dollar Vax Alliance launched the hard-to-resist campaign in a bid to boost national vaccination rates.

Alliance chair Craig Winkler said the take up has been “fantastic”.

“Since it was published we have seen numbers jump … this is a fantastic result,” Mr Winkler said.

“All web issues have been resolved, it was slowed down periodically due to the massive spike in entries yesterday morning but that is fixed.”

The campaign even got a seal of approval from Victoria’s Premier Daniel Andrews, who gave the initiative a thumbs up.

“I’m not fussed about what motivates you – whether it is for your health and to help the people you love, to protect our health system and our nurses or to win $1 million,” he said.

“Just go and get vaccinated.”

There will be 100 gift cards given out every day worth $1000 throughout October, as well as the ultimate prize of $1 million dollars which will be drawn on November 5.

It comes as Australia is only days away from reaching a significant milestone in its Covid-19 vaccine rollout, with the number of jabs doled out edging toward the 30 million mark.

More than 79 per cent of Australians aged 16 and over have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while around 56 per cent have been fully inoculated against the virus.

Four million jabs have been administered in the past fortnight alone.

Mr Winkler said the promotion was not made to “convince people” to be vaccinated.

“The promotion simply seeks to reward people who decide to be vaccinated now rather than waiting …. and to help people who were thinking about getting the jab but hadn’t crossed that line yet,” he said.

The campaign was inspired by the successful Ohio ‘Vax-A-Million’ campaign in the United States, which gave $1 million to five lucky residents who had received at least one dose of the vaccine.

Some of the generous donors include the Susan McKinnon foundation, Jasper foundation and the P & S Bassat foundation.

However, others have chosen to remain anonymous as they wanted the focus to be on “giving back to the community” rather than their contribution.

Entry into the Million Dollar Vax can be made at www.milliondollarvax.com.

All Australians aged 18 and over are eligible to enter, with those already vaccinated still eligible to win, provided both vaccinations have been received by six weeks after October 31, 2021.
