As covid cases continue to surge in Greater Sydney, chemists across the country will begin administering vaccines this week, in a boost to the nation’s rollout.

About 1000 sites across Australia have been approved to commence rolling out the jab, which began at 49 pharmacies in regional Queensland last month.

The pharmacy vaccination program is set to expand under stage 2a of the national rollout, after capital cities across the country were plunged into lockdown following the spread of the highly-infectious Delta variant.

As reported by News Corp, 113 pharmacies in three states will be delivering Covid-19 shots from today.

Sites in the Northern Territory and Western Australia are expected to come on board this week, with pharmacies in NSW, Victoria and South Australia to offer the jab from next week.

By early August, more than 460 pharmacies will be included in the program, with this number to rise to 1000 sites by the end of August, across all states and territories, excluding the ACT and Tasmania.

In NSW, 22 pharmacies across regional and rural NSW will begin administering the AstraZeneca jab as part of a pilot program next week.

These sites will administer vaccines to people aged 60 and over, and will be located where access to a GP or vaccine clinic is limited due to geography.

Among the towns on the list are Braidwood, Old Bar, Narromine and Dunedoo.

In Queensland, 82 additional pharmacies will offer free covid shots at the end of July, with another 186 sites to offer the jab in August.

Queensland pharmacies currently offering the jab include Wallumbilla, Tin Can Bay, Barcaldine and Hamilton Island.

In Victoria, pharmacies on the list include sites in Yackandandah and Beechworth, while in South Australia, pharmacies in towns including Coober Pedy and Hayborough will offer covid shots.

In Western Australia, the towns of Bakers Hill and Manjimup are on the list of pharmacies to deliver the jab. In the Northern Territory, towns where pharmacists will be able to give the jab include Alice Springs and Humpty Doo.

To find out whether a pharmacy near you is offering the covid vaccine, search the Find a Pharmacy website. The site will be updated each week with new pharmacies.

Anyone wishing to receive a vaccine at a listed pharmacy is advised to make an appointment due to limited supplies.

Pharmacies in metropolitan areas are expected to come on board in September and October.

How to get the covid vaccine:

The covid vaccine rollout has started with priority groups, based on: potential exposure to Covid-19 cases (such as healthcare and quarantine workers), age and medical conditions, and, vulnerability or regular contact with vulnerable people.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 16 and older are also eligible to receive the vaccine.

Vaccines are available at GPs and Commonwealth Vaccination Clinics (previously General Practice Respiratory Clinics), State Government clinics and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services.

You can get the vaccine now if you are 40 years of age or older, or match the eligibility criteria because of your job, medical conditions or if you are caring for a vulnerable person.

According to the Department of Health, the following people are now eligible for the Covid-19 vaccine:

• All adults aged 40-49

• All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 16 to 49

• NDIS participants aged 16 years and over, and unpaid and informal carers of NDIS participants of any age

• Temporary visa holders aged under 50 years who are currently in Australia and have been approved for return travel to Australia through the travel exemption process

• Adults aged 18-39 can choose to receive the AstraZeneca vaccine

This is in addition to the following people, who were already eligible for vaccination:

• All adults aged 50 and over

• Quarantine and border workers

• Health care workers

• Aged care and disability care residents and staff

• People aged 16 and over with an underlying medical condition or significant disability

• Critical and high risk workers aged 16 and over including defence, police, fire, emergency services and meat processing

• Individuals with an Australian Border Force outwards travel exemption in an eligible category

In South Australia, people 16 years and over living in a regional council area are also eligible to receive the vaccine.
