WORKERS are ramping up cleaning on Gold Coast buses, trams and trains to battle coronavirus.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey has told TransLink to work with operators to sanitise all transport options across the state more often.

Gold Coast trams are being sanitised daily and Queensland Rail will increase the number of cleaners to launch a new disinfecting process on commuter trains today.

Workers have also been told to use gloves and hand sanitiser when handling cash.

Mr Bailey said: “Public transport is an essential service and it’s critical we ensure people continue to have confidence when travelling on buses, trains, trams and ferries.”

He said public transport would continue to operate normally, but services could be reduced “in response to advice from health experts and authorities”.

Commuters should wash their hands thoroughly, avoid contact with anyone with symptoms, cover mouths and noses when coughing and sneezing and stay at home if they are unwell.
