Coles launches 60-minute ‘click and collect’ service as supermarkets prepare for Christmas rush

Exclusive: Millions of Australians will now be able to order and collect their groceries in less than an hour, in a bold move by supermarket giant Coles.
The 60-minute Rapid Click & Collect service will allow online shoppers to buy and pick up their items at one of more than 400 stores across the nation — with another 200 stores expected to be added early next year.
More than 20,000 products will be available, including products not normally offered for home delivery orders, like the hot roast chook.
Customers can place an order for up to 40 items, with a minimum spend of $30, and pay a flat fee of $5 for it to be picked, packed and ready for collection 60 minutes later.
However, the supermarket giant’s quick turnaround only works if you order any day between 8.30am and 4.30pm.
“Our Rapid Click & Collect service has grown in popularity since launching in February last year,” Coles Chief Executive Officer Steven Cain said.
“Our research shows the number one consideration for online shoppers is convenience and for click and collect customers it’s immediate collection.
“Rapid Click & Collect in under 60 minutes will make it easier for customers to have their groceries conveniently delivered to their car boot as quickly as possible when they don’t have time to shop inside the store.”
Queensland University of Technology retail expert Gary Mortimer said the latest move shows how the retail industry is changing rapidly and supermarkets are racing to find the quickest and most convenient ways to get groceries to their customers.
“When it comes to online food and grocery shopping, I believe the point of competition has moved from price to speed,” he said.
“It's no longer relevant to be the cheapest in the market, but in fact the fastest.
“So while we’re probably prepared to wait a couple of days to get a pair of shoes delivered or a new electronic, when it comes to food and groceries, we want to order it now and have it ordered, delivered and collected reasonably quickly.”
Earlier this year, Woolworths ramped up its presence in grocery delivery by launching its 60-minute delivery service Metro60, where shoppers can have their groceries delivered in an hour.
“Coles’ latest move shows just how competitive the online food and grocery market is. And it’s certainly going to shake up those smaller operators like Milkrun,” Mr Mortimer said.
“And as we move into December, staffing levels increase and and that's going to facilitate this expedited click and collect service.”
