Cairns comedy: Class Clowns Cairns winner Esther Atkins heads to Brisbane
A Cairns State High School student has built her budding comedy career out of the “random” and “hilarious” things her mother says - and she’s set to test the jokes on a whole new crowd in Brisbane this weekend.

LUCKILY Esther Atkins’ mum has a sense of humour because the Cairns State High School student has built her budding comedy career out of the “random” and “hilarious” things her mother says.
The 17-year-old will head to Brisbane this weekend to perform in the state final of the Class Clowns comedy competition after blitzing the field at a regional heat on Wednesday.
“Comedy is definitely my favourite genre. This was my second time doing stand-up,” Esther said.
“It has to be personal to you, I think. A lot of young people try to make jokes about Trump or current topics, but when it’s personal, it’s easier.
“My stand-up is mostly about my mum and the silly things she says and does. I think people will see her quite differently, now. She doesn’t really think before she speaks and says the most random things.
“She’s laughed harder at the jokes than any other person I’ve performed it to.”
The Year 12 student named British comedians Joe Wilkinson and Rob Beckett as among her favourites. She looked forward to taking part in workshops at Brisbane Powerhouse on Sunday as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s youth program.
