In the perfect start to 2019, Brisbane Broncos halfback Kodi Nikorima and his partner Bree Tobler have welcomed a baby boy.

The 24-year-old rugby league player described becoming a dad as the best day of his life, sharing to social media a sweet photo from the hospital late Saturday.

“Best day of my life! So proud of you @breetobler_ this little man is blessed to have you as a mother,” Nikorima wrote.

The couple named their son Zavier Caleb Nikorima, as a nod to the halfback’s family.

“We’re in love with him,” Tobler, 23, told the Courier-Mail on Sunday.

“The first name we decided together. His middle name Caleb which is part of Kodi’s brother Jayden’s middle name (Caleb-Kingi), it is after their parents, a combination of Calley and Deb.

“So his middle name is after all three — Jayden, Calley and Deb Nikorima.”

Tobler, a registered nurse, said she was induced at midday on Friday, 11 days before her due date, and gave birth via an emergency caesarean shortly after midnight.

The pair have been dating for four years after meeting through a mutual friend, who Tobler said “gave him my number against my will”.

But a diagnosis of polycystic ovaries left her unsure if she could conceive, and the couple were surprised to fall pregnant last year.

Nikorima is the third Broncos player to welcome a newborn since the 2018 season.

Jamayne Isaako welcomed his baby boy Isaiah in November and Anthony Milford became a father to his baby girl, Ariana, last month.

Tobler said they had already planned for Isaiah and Zavier to be best friends.

“It’s nice to have a lot of friends in the club that are having children,” she said.
