Body found off Cabarita Wharf, Sydney, after reports of an assault

A NAKED man was found standing over a woman found floating near a wharf in inner-west Sydney late last night.

POLICE responding to reports of screams and yelling at a ferry wharf in inner-west Sydney overnight arrived to find a naked man standing over a woman in the water.

The 35-year-old man tried to flee from police but was taken into custody and is being questioned at Burwood police station.

The woman, 27, was also naked and floating in the water in Cabarita Wharf, near Canada Bay.

Despite frantic attempts to revive her by both police and paramedics she couldn’t be saved and died at the scene.

The pair knew each other but their exact relationship was unclear.

“We do not believe this is a random attack. We believe these pair may well have been known to each other,” Detective Superintendent Mark Jones told reporters this morning.

Police were called to the area about 11.30pm by people who could hear screaming and yelling.

The woman was found in about 30cm of water with cuts to her face.

A water police vessel arrived at the wharf early today, while police divers are scouring the water. Police are reportedly carrying out searches at other locations.

An Audi car that was parked near the wharf has been towed away to be forensically examined.
