Two community-led renewable energy projects in the Geelong region will get a combined $110,000 from the state government.
The Surf Coast Energy Group will be tasked with overseeing solar panel instillations at five primary schools in Barwon region in a project that will cost $104,000.
This project, that the government will contribute $91,000 to, will see the installation of 102.4 kW of solar panels in an aim to reduce carbon emissions and electricity bills.
The cost savings are expected to be used to fund further sustainability projects at the schools.
Meanwhile Bell Park Sport and Recrreation Club will be awarded more than $26,000 for a $29,000 solar panel project.
The club said, savings made through lower power bills, will be redirected to support Bell Park football, netball and cricket teams.
Both projects are funded through a $1 million spend statewide in a round of community grants, and will play a part in Victoria’s 2050 net-zero emissions target.
Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said driving down emissions and promoting renewable energy was something everyone can do.
“These grants will give local communities the opportunity to harness clean energy technology to reduce emissions, build a local renewable energy economy and create local jobs,” Ms D’Ambrosio said.
“The Victorian Renewable Energy Target of 50 per cent by 2030 is making Victoria the best place to locate and grow a low-carbon business.”
Lara MP John Eren said: “We’ve all got a part of play in driving down emissions – and this crucial funding for the Bell Park Sport and Recreation Club will help them reduce their environmental footprint and also save costs in the long run.”
South Barwon MP Darren Cheeseman said: “The Fund is all about empowering local businesses and communities to do their bit for the environment by coming up with renewable energy projects that will not only reduce emissions, but create local jobs.”
