THE man in charge of the Australian Border Force is on leave amid a mysterious investigation.

The government has confirmed ABF Commissioner Roman Quaedvlieg, a former Queensland policeman, is not currently on active duty.

The high-profile Commissioner, who has been on leave from his $700,000 job since Senate estimates hearings earlier this year, is facing an investigation.

Acting Immigration and Border Protection Minister Michael Keenan’s office issued a statement which said: “A matter is under consideration by appropriate authorities.”

“There will be no further comment until that process is complete,” the statement said.

Former Immigration Department media boss Sandi Logan claimed on Twitter that Mr Quaedvlieg was on leave because of an “external investigation” into his “activities”.

Mr Quaedvlieg was formerly the head of the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service and took on the Border Force role two years ago.

He was seen to be a contender to take over from NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione this year but missed out on the job to Mick Fuller.

It is unclear how long he has been on leave but he has not tweeted from his official account since May 25.
