Almost 50 Covid deaths in Victoria and NSW as case numbers fall
There has been a sharp decline in the daily number of new Covid cases in Australia’s two biggest states, however almost 50 deaths were reported.

The latest daily Covid case numbers released show a big drop in Australia’s two biggest states despite a spike in deaths.
Victoria recorded 8737 new cases, down from the previous daily total of 11,369.
In NSW the fall in cases was smaller, with 7540 new cases recorded — down from 8690.
The latest numbers were released by state health authorities on Saturday morning and they show another almost 50 people in NSW and Victoria died with Covid.

In the 24-hour reporting period to 4pm yesterday:
- 96.4% of people aged 16+ have had one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine

In NSW there were 25 deaths recorded, while Victoria had 22.
On Friday NSW and Victoria reported nine deaths each.
The most recent death data in NSW included previously unreported lives lost as far back as mid-April, NSW Health said on Twitter.

In the line with the drop in Covid cases, hospital admissions also fell in NSW and Victoria.
There 540 Covid patients hospitalised in Victoria, down from 571 the previous day.
In NSW there were 1,139 hospitalised, a decline from 1,173.
The figures come amid growing concern from doctors, nurses and paramedics about pressure on hospital and ambulance services sparked by a sharp spike in flu cases along with Covid.
