The world has watched on in horror at the scenes coming out of Afghanistan – here are the ways ordinary Aussies can help.

Afghan refugees 'need the security' of a permanent visa

Australians are watching in horror as Afghanistan descends into chaos and people flee for their lives from the Taliban.

Many are asking “how can we help?” Here are some ways you can make a difference by donating or supporting these agencies who are running appeals and assisting the Afghan people.

UNICEF

Unicef will continue to have a team in Afghanistan. A donation to UNICEF will help support programs involving water, nutrition, health and child protection. Donate to their Help Children in Afghanistan appeal here.

CARE AUSTRALIA

CARE Australia has launched a dedicated fundraising appeal for Afghanistan.

CARE is concerned that the gains Afghan women have made in terms of rights, education and opportunities will be reversed. It is anticipated that early and forced marriages, and other risks to women and girls, will increase.

WITH YOU WITH ME

-Veteran-founded organisation, WithYouWithMe is dedicating $10 million dollars of free digital skills and training to Afghan refugees following the fall of Kabul to the Taliban.

Co-founder and CEO Tom Moore is among 39,000 Australian troops who have been

deployed to Afghanistan since 2001.

“I’ve watched the recent events unfold in Afghanistan and it’s been heartbreaking to see on

a deeply personal level. Many of our staff are veterans and we firmly believe that the good

folks who risked everything to help us deserve our support,” Mr Moore said.

These organisations are working to help the people of Afghanistan with their food, shelter, healthcare and educational needs, according to the Australian Philanthropic Service.

SAWA

-Support Association for the Women of Afghanistan (SAWA) sawa-australia.org

SAWA has a history of supporting women, particularly under the previous Taliban regime. SAWA’s aim is to assist projects dedicated to the advancement of the rights of Afghanistan’s women in all areas

MAHBOBA’S PROMISE

Mahboba’s Promise was founded by Mahboba Rawi, an Afghan refugee and now an Australian citizen. The organisation has their own team working on the ground who will continue its work. $150 towards their current appeal with provide a single family with shelter, food, water, baby formula, blankets, pillows, basic hygiene to meet their fundamental needs.

AFGHAN AUSTRALIAN DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION

The AADO has run teacher training as well as literacy and livelihood programs for village women and will continue to support the people in their communities.

REFUGEE COUNCIL OF AUSTRALIA

The Refugee Council of Australia has released a statement about what they would like the Australian Government to do to support Afghanistan.

ASIA PACIFIC NETWORK OF REFUGEES

The organisation is running an emergency appeal to support their Afghan partners who are caring for the most vulnerable. will be used to give food, clean water, shelter and cash assistance to families that have lost their homes.

UNHCR is focused on an emergency response for the large number of Afghans who’ve had to flee their homes.

RED CROSS AUSTRALIA

The International Red Cross remains in Afghanistan and is working on humanitarian aid requirements.
