Cash-strapped Aussies are quite literally turning their hand to a new side hustle, paying up to $200 per hour.
As quirky as it may sound, hand and foot models are highly-sought after by beverage, jewellery and footwear companies.
Pizza giant Domino’s is currently searching the trans-Tasman for a new hand model to showcase its pizza products.
“As an idea of the payment that one can generate from such work, much of the remuneration is based on the brand profile, imagery (and) asset usage (such as) what type of image and asset is being produced, the distribution as well as the length (term) of utility,” Royalle Modelling Agency’s CEO George Bastoli said.
“Traditionally (body) part’s modelling has remained consistent with brands that require such imagery (such as) beverage, jewellery, footwear et cetera. For a mainstream campaign on say a billboard, a model can expect to receive in excess of $8-20,000 (specifics dependant) and in most cases rollover usage fees.
“Although this area is still in demand, the rates have seen a large decline over the years predominantly due to the emergence and growth of the influencer space.”
He said the main target age for hand and foot models was mid 20s or over 50s, and a separate modelling agency boss, who did not want to be named, said the going rate was up to $200 per hour.
In the long term, artificial intelligence is expected to erode some of these work opportunities.
Domino’s will pay its hand model $100 an hour to showcase its new menu innovations at the company’s Global Headquarters in Brisbane.
During the day of work, the chosen hand model will also receive a tour of Domino’s top-secret innovation kitchen, spend time in the ‘Say Cheese’ professional photo studio, and enjoy a pizza lunch.
“We’re proud to provide joyful experiences for pizza lovers, including the chance to get paid for holding our handcrafted pizzas,” Domino’s ANZ People Business Partner Matt Baldwin said.
The successful candidate must be over 18, complete a survey, and submit a photo of their best pizza hand modelling poses. Or, they can send a 30 second video demonstrating their pizza holding skills.
The ideal candidate will be a master at shadow puppetry with good hand flexibility, creativity, and be able to lift a minimum of four pizza slices per hand.
They must also be to hold a very still pose for long periods of time.
“We believe every Domino’s pizza deserves perfect presentation, which is why we’re searching far and wide for the perfect pair of strong and steady hands to help us out,” Domino’s ANZ Head of New Product Development & Innovation Michael Treacy said.
“From kneading dough to the delicate placement of toppings, we rely on hands every step of the way in the pizza making process.
“This role is no easy feat. Executing the perfect cheese pull back-to-back requires both the grace of a ballerina and the determination of a boxer.”
