The 2024 NAPLAN results have been released to the public, revealing a shake-up in the Territory’s top performing schools.
This masthead conducted an analysis of the 2024 NAPLAN results to determine the highest performing year 5 and year 9 cohorts in the Territory.
There were no changes to the top two in each category, with independent schools continuing to record the highest results.
However, two government primary schools have catapulted into the top five, with one school jumping 21 places to claim third best in the Territory.
Topping the primary school ranking for the third consecutive year was Haileybury Rendall School.
The independent school’s year 5 cohort recorded an average score of 527.2 across the NAPLAN metrics — reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy.
High-flyer Durack Primary School jumped from 24th last year, to place third among all the Territory’s primary schools in 2024.
The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) recognised this achievement by placing Durack on its 20 schools “making a difference”.
Honourable mentions in this category extend to Alice Springs School of the Air who led the schools south of Palmerston, jumping from 32nd place in 2023 to fifth overall.
In the secondary schools category, The Essington School continued its unbeaten streak, placing first for the third year in a row.
The Essington School’s average year 9 NAPLAN score was 604.
Three of the top five secondary schools this year were independent schools.
Darwin Middle School led the government secondary schools, placing second overall.
St Philip’s College in Alice Springs was the top performer of schools south of the Berrimah Line, placing fourth in the Territory.
Research Leader at the Batchelor Institute, John Guenther, said NAPLAN was a “useful tool” for measuring “system effectiveness”.
“At a regional or territory level, NAPLAN provides a good measure of the success or failure of the education system in pursuit of delivering a quality education,” Mr Guenther said.
“However, it should not be seen as an indication of success or failure of individual schools or teachers.
“I think Territorians need to know how their schools compare with other states.
“Our education systems should be (and I think they are) focused on improving results and developing strategies accordingly.”
