A plan to redevelop an under-utilised beach in Fannie Bay is set to kick off on Monday morning with the first official consultation to take place.

Local architecture firm Hames Sharley and the council of Darwin will begin the process of developing a masterplan for the area, which was renamed Bundilla Beach two years ago.

The process aims to engage the community and stakeholders and will inform the new design of Bundilla Beach, hoping to create more opportunities for recreation and leisure.

The consultation process will continue until mid November and a finalised, detailed masterplan of Bundilla Beach is expected to be delivered by early next year.

Areas to be considered as part of the masterplan include green spaces, waterfront views, lagoon and carparking areas.

A plan to revitalise the area has long been in the works, with Mayor Kon Vatskalis saying that for almost 20 years different ideas had been proposed but a “masterplan with a solid vision” was missing.

Hames Sharley was awarded the tender to develop the area earlier this year, with Darwin city council providing $500,000 in funding and a further $3 million from the NT government.

A council proposal to use Bundilla Beach reserve as an RV carpark to increase revenue to the area was met with opposition from locals in May.

Fannie Bay MLA Brent Potter collected more than 177 signatures in a petition to fight the proposal.

Alternative suggested plans for the site include a basketball half-court, four food truck sites, and a dog park.
