Meghan just can’t catch a break with royal traditionalists

She can’t step out in public without putting her foot in it — or so you would think if you believed all the breathless British articles about Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. And they’re at it again this week.

She can’t step out in public without putting her foot in it — or so you would think if you believed all the breathless British articles about Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.

Despite being the most accomplished of royal brides; as an actor, a divorcee and American of mixed race, the British media doesn’t want to let her forget she’s an outsider, with every engagement analysed for a faux pas.

We’ve had the wrong dress — baring her shoulders at the Trooping The Colour was apparently almost as naughty as turning up in her nightie; faffing about whether to get into the car before The Queen and not wearing a hat in the wind. All hair-raising stuff.

But this week’s stuff-up was the sin of sitting with her legs crossed at the knee whilst attending The Queen’s Young Leaders’ Awards in Buckingham Palace on Tuesday. She should, it was reported, have crossed her legs at the ankle.

It is not known how many guests fainted with fright at the sight, but we’re looking into it.

Once again, nobody mentioned she wore tights, which was disappointing as her hosiery caused outrage a few weeks ago. Sheer madness. She did, however, win some points back by having particularly pretty make-up and new hair, which is a relief to all.

Her husband Prince Harry, meanwhile, has been nipping about all over the place this week — with a trip to South Africa and Lesotho for his Sentebale charity, returning at six in the morning on Tuesday, Meghan revealed. He then dashed off for a game of polo the following day in Henley-on-Thames. Meghan was not in the crowd — she was probably at home

practising sitting down correctly.

Harry also put paid to the notion the couple honeymooned in Namibia, telling a guest on Tuesday they didn’t visit the country, but he wasn’t going to say where they went. It’s unclear why, seeing as they are not there anymore.

On Thursday, The Queen was taken ill, meaning it was left to Angelina Jolie to reign at the 200th anniversary of the Order of St Michael and St George honours system at St Paul’s Cathedral. The actor “did a Meghan” in a soft grey Ralph & Russo boat-neck dress and gloves and matching hat. Nobody minded about her shoulders. She didn’t wear tights.

It was reported royal spending went up this year with the arrival of Meghan into The Firm (Prince Charles pays for his extended family’s expenditure) and increased duties by Prince William, Harry and all.

This week William made a royal-first trip to Jordan, Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Sky News revealed on the plane to Jordan William joked about whether they would be reporting on what he was wearing and his hair.

What a ridiculous notion. He did, however, cross his legs at the knee when talking to Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, but it didn’t cause a diplomatic incident.

We’ll leave that to Meghan.
