A Townsville local is bringing bright, bold fashions to the market, with a strong focus on sustainability and love for her home country.

Medha Chaturvedi, who is originally from Jaipur, India, moved to Australia aged 17 to study and work as a medical laboratory scientist.

While studying Ms Chaturvedi worked at Myer in Townsville and inspired by her love of fashion came up with the idea of making her own brand to create colourful and size inclusive clothing.

“Every time I would go shopping I saw a lot of the same thing and neutral tones and I just felt like there needed to be a bit more colour. They were also highly priced,” she said.

“I saw that there was generic sizing for women, six, eight and 10 and I feel like women’s bodies are more than that.”

“I wanted to create a brand that had bright, bold colours which were different from what is on offer and was also size inclusive.”

Her clothing brand Woven Visions was born, which combines vibrant colours and patterns from her home city.

“Jaipur is a World Heritage Site and is famous for its block prints and a lot of culture, heritage and colours,” she said.

The designs use traditional hand-block printing where intricate patterns are carved onto wooden blocks, dipped into natural dyes and pressed onto cotton.

The brand aims to be as sustainable and ethical as possible, sourcing 100% cotton fabrics and employing underprivileged women back in India.

“The brand is a real blend of India and Australia, and I think that relationship is very important to me because both countries have given me a lot,” she said.

Within a week of launching, Ms Chaturvedi said she has been blown away by the interest from both Townsville locals and customers across the country.

Due to the overwhelming response from the public she plans to incorporate men’s and kids clothes in the future and is travelling back to India to discuss and meet with fabric designers and create her website.
