The Townsville family renowned for filling bellies around the city set its sights to the northern suburbs, where a newly opened Deeragun store combines their other business’ strengths to satisfy hunger and sweet tooth cravings.

After launching Pimlico confectionery business The Candy Wrapper in 2016, and taking over North Ward’s The Treehouse in 2019 - which combines Hopscotch ice creamery, Rock Paper Scissors fish and chips, Coffee Time Cafe, and Checkers Pizza - the Mason Family officially opened Mason’s Restaurant in Deeragun Village shopping mall on February 15.

Combining savoury and sweet, Mason’s Restaurant owner operator Jesse Mason said they were targeting a gap in the market for Townsville’s northern suburbs by offering popular products from their other stores, all in one place.

Their offering includes pizzas which go up to “Yowie” size, fish and chips, burgers, coffees, cafe meals, and “the biggest dessert bar in Townsville”.

“We saw the potential for the Deeragun site, that was the old Seashells Takeaway, I think they closed down maybe 12 or 18 months ago ... it’s basically perfect for what we want to be doing, with a nice, big open space that looks really appealing, and right in the center of the suburbs,” Mr Mason said.

“That’s pretty much the direction that Townsville is heading as it’s expanding out towards the suburbs.

“We’re going to have a bit more of a takeaway focus, because the goal is for families going shopping at the Coles that’s next door, it’s designed in a way where you can walk through ... pick up a feed then go, and it’s very quick and easy.”

He said they planned to employ 20-25 staff and had a seating capacity of 14, which could potentially expand up to 22 in the future.

“Our slogan is going to be ‘a taste for everybody and a plate for every taste’ and we’ve got a a big focus on desserts in the absence of Max Brenner or other dessert focused places inside of Townsville,” he said.

Made with beads of icecream frozen to minus 45 degrees by liquid nitrogen, the store will sell 20 flavours of dippin’ dots, along with 18 ice cream flavours, sundaes, waffles, crepes, and 20 thickshake flavours.

With their coffee beans sourced locally from Coffee Presto, Mr Mason planned to satisfy the city’s growing thirst for Vietnamese-style iced coffee.

To help people struggling with cost of living pressures, the business will offer daily specials from Monday to Thursday, including two waffle cones for $10, two pizzas for $28, and two seafood cones for $24.

If the community got behind the local business, Mr Mason envisaged opening further Mason’s Restaurant stores nationwide or international eventually, such was their confidence in their product offering.

“We don’t really want to look at franchising options. We want to have everything privately owned and run if we eventually get to that stage, so we can make sure that our quality never drops,” he said.
