The body of a second man has been recovered by police at Wilsons Prom at 4pm, after he went missing on Christmas Day.

It follows the drowning of another man at Squeaky Beach, also on Friday.

The men were swimming with friends at the popular enclave when they got into trouble about 3.40pm.

One of them was dragged to the sand by a member of the public.

Those at the scene applied CPR but the man died.

A search is underway for a man missing off Wilsons Promontory.

Local police and a helicopter later scoured nearby waters looking for the second swimmer.

Squeaky Beach is closed to visitors today, with two Parks Victoria officers manning the Squeaky Beach turn-off on Wilsons Promontory Road to ensure no one gets through to the usually popular beach.

It comes as the weather is set to hit 26C and many tourists are flocking to the popular national park.

Victoria Police are yet to provide an update on Saturday about the operation.

The ages and suburbs of the men have not yet been released.

Their relationship remains unknown.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.

Squeaky Beach is a busy beach during the summer months, frequently packed with overseas and domestic visitors.

Conditions can be dangerous, especially when there is a solid swell, because of its steep nature and rips.

Andrew Keay, visiting from Wurruk, said he witnessed the police helicopter as well as ambulances and road police vehicles in the area last night.

“It’s pretty sad,” Mr Keay said of the Christmas Day tragedy.

“I couldn’t imagine what they are going through. Someone has lost family members

“It’s wrecked someone’s Christmas.”

Mr Keay said he had been visiting Wilsons Prom for 40 years and knew how dangerous Squeaky beach could be.

“It’s treacherous,” he said.

“There are signs everywhere saying beware of the dangerous currents. But people can’t always read the signs.

“When we saw all the police activity – we figured something grim had happened.”

Hoda Saleem and her partner were visiting from Clyde North on a day trip

“It’s upsetting to hear,” Ms Saleem said.

“This is a family-like location – it is the last thing you want here about.

“It wakes you up to be careful all the time around the water.”
