Man arrested as NT Police seized 255 kgs of kava in Maningrida

A tip-off to police led authorities to the massive haul of kava, with a young man set to face court. Details.

February 10, 3.30pm:

More than 250 kilograms of kava has been seized following a police search in Maningrida at the weekend.

Around 12pm on Saturday, police conducted a lawful search of a property after receiving intelligence the banned substance was being harboured in the premises.

During the search, police seized 255.13 kg of kava and more than $3900 in cash.

A 24 year-old man was arrested at the scene and has been charged with possessing a commercial quantity of kava and supplying a commercial quantity of kava.

Sergeant Timothy Gillahan praised those involved in the interception – including the public.

“I commend the officers for their swift action in response to intelligence, as well as the community for their reporting,” he said.

“This seizure will undoubtedly reduce the social and financial harm within the community often caused by kava use.

“The NT Police Force remains committed to disrupting the flow of destructive substances into restricted communities.”

The alleged offender is due to appear in Darwin Local Court on Thursday, February, 13.

Teenager accused of repeat break-ins and indecent exposure arrested

February 10, 2.40pm: A 17-year-old boy has been arrested for allegedly breaking into the same residence seven times and indecently exposing himself on several occasions.

Between February 3 and 6, the 17-year-old allegedly entered a residence in Lyons on seven different occasions, stealing alcohol and personal items, as well as indecently exposing himself on several occasions.

Police say the offences were captured on CCTV.

On Saturday, February 8, Strike Force Trident detectives attended the victim’s residence to progress their investigation after police were notified of an alleged indecent touching incident which occurred on a woman who was exercising in the area.

Police then found and arrested the teenage boy, who has been charged with seven counts of trespassing, four counts of theft, two counts of aggravated burglary, two counts of indecent exposure, indecent touching, damaging property and breaching bail.

Detective acting senior sergeant Chris Humphries hailed the efforts of those involved in the investigation.

“I commend the efforts of my detectives for their swift response and comprehensive investigation into these incidents.

“This behaviour will not be tolerated and police will continue to put serious offenders before the courts.”

The 17-year-old was held in remand and was expected in court on Monday.

Woman taken to hospital after she was shocked while changing a light bulb

February 9, 7.30pm: A woman was taken to hospital after she was shocked while changing a light bulb.

About 7.30pm Sunday, paramedics from St John NT attended an address in Winnellie, where a 31-year-old woman was shocked while changing a light bulb.

She was later taken to Royal Darwin Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and was in a stable condition, paramedics said.
