A man and a woman have died on the Stuart Highway just 24km past the South Australia border.

Two people have died after a crash on the Stuart Highway near the South Australia border.

The Northern Territory Police Force is investigating the single vehicle crash that occurred 3km north of Kulgera on Thursday morning.

At 11.40am, the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received reports a vehicle had rolled on its side along the highway about 24km north of the border.

Emergency services deployed from Alice Springs and Marla and the two vehicle occupants, a man and a woman, were found dead at the scene.

The Stuart Highway is now closed in both directions and police urge road users to avoid the area where possible.

The number of lives lost on Territory roads now stands at 14.
