A Kirwan mother says she will be boycotting a Magnetic Island cafe over a claim another family was told to leave by the establishment because of crying children — but the cafe owner has unequivocally disputed the claims and said the kids screamed, and threw objects on the floor.
Laura Edwards posted video of her angrily protesting the decision of Adele’s Cafe in Horseshoe Bay as the family left from where they were sitting outdoors at the front of the cafe.
But cafe co-owner Adrian Dalloste said the children had reacted angrily to having to share one gelato between them and had thrown a tantrum for about 15 minutes, which was affecting other customers trying to enjoy their meals.
He said he was confused by Ms Edward’s intervention, as it did not concern her, and that she had arrived after he told the parents they would have to leave. Mr Dalloste also said that Ms Edwards did not witness the entire situation and only arrived after the family was asked to leave.
In the video taken on Sunday Ms Edwards could be overheard criticising the decision as “absolutely disgusting”, as one of the children could be heard crying.
“It wasn’t a meltdown or tantrum, my kids make more noise than these kids do, it was just a grizzly kid needing some help to sort through his emotion at the time,” Ms Edwards said.
“The parents were sitting down with them, they weren’t running riot.
“As the guy went back inside I went over to the family and I said, ‘excuse me, are you getting kicked out because your kid’s crying?’
“He said, ‘yeah, they just told us to leave because of it’, and they seemed a bit shocked and upset and both kids at this stage, both of them were crying.’”
Ms Edwards said she then walked into the shop to raise the issue with the cafe, and that they had an argument which the entire shop could hear.
During the confrontation she claimed she was told, “we’re not a creche” and asked what business it was of hers.
She believed that as a mother-of-three, and customer, she should have the right to intervene, and that there were better ways the business could have managed the situation.
“I think sometimes you do get looked down upon when having kids, especially if they’re having tantrums and stuff, but their brains aren’t fully developed at that age, and they need help to process those emotions,” Ms Edwards said.
“Both children became upset when told they would be sharing a gelato between them, one of the children swiped [at] decorations from the counter and threw a steel flask on the tile flood,” Mr Dalloste said.
“Whilst leaving the children were screaming loudly, the family sat outside at one of our dining tables,” he said.
“For approximately 15 minutes the children were crying and screaming disturbing the other clientele trying to enjoy their meals and ambience of the cafe.
“The crying and screaming was constant and loud.”
Mr Dalloste said after the parents were unable to calm down the children, he was yelled at by the father after he apologetically asked them to leave.
“I walked back into the cafe to avoid any more confrontation as they became quite vocal.”
He said the family refused to leave at first, and that he eventually warned that he would need to call the police.
