An overhaul of the Twin Ovals and surrounding sports precinct to make way for two High Performance Centres will be unveiled in detail by the Kingborough Council at two public information sessions in August.

With the future of Tasmania’s AFL club is in the hands of the state’s politicians, the Tasmania Devils AFL team will still be involved in the information sessions about the football HPC, as well as JackJumpers representatives to speak about the basketball HPC.

Kingborough Mayor Paula Wriedt said the two flagship sports teams would be joined by Twin Ovals resident teams, cricket’s Kingborough Knights and 2023 State League football premier Kingborough Tigers, for the reveal.

“Community members will be able to meet with representatives from the Tasmania Football Club, Kingborough Knights, Kingborough Tigers, Tasmania JackJumpers and the Project Team,” she said.

“The sessions will provide clarity around the masterplan, including future changes to community facilities, and the long-term social and economic benefits this centre will bring to our region.”

The $105m AFL High Performance Centre and Devils administration base is funded by the AFL and state government, with Kingborough Council providing land and staff support.

“This project is of the utmost importance to our club, with the development being our future home base for all of our on-field and off-field staff,” said Devils CEO Brendon Gale.

“We continue to work closely with our neighbours and look forward to engaging with the community more broadly to ensure that the project is understood and valued.

“With 33 sporting groups already based at the Kingborough Sports Precinct, including the Tasmania JackJumpers, State Gymnastics Centre, and Kingston High School, the precinct will become a hub of premier sporting activity and we cannot wait to be a part of it.

“We are looking forward to working with the community as the project progresses and ensuring that the precinct continues to grow as a welcoming and accessible space for everyone.”

To fit the AFL HPC within the sports precinct, two new ovals will be built for the Tigers and Knights teams, with one oval located above, and the other below, the current Twin Ovals.

“In order to build the new ovals we will need to relocate some existing community facilities within the precinct,” Ms Wriedt said.

“That includes the Kingston View Drive off-lead dog exercise area, Southern Obedience Club and the Kingborough Mountain Bike Park.

“Council has been working closely with the existing sporting groups throughout the planning process, and the masterplan has their ongoing support.

“Any relocations or modifications will be undertaken in a way that maintains or enhances existing service levels and community access.”

The information sessions are:

Saturday August 2, from 10am to 1pm

Wednesday August 6, from 3pm to 6.30pm
