Khaled Sharrouf’s former home is the focal point into investigating whether he remains alive

THIS is the Sydney house that brought Islamic State terrorist Khaled Sharrouf back from the dead.

The house, which legally cannot be identified by its address, was where he plotted his escape to Syria to become a pawn for the death cult, until he was reportedly killed by a drone strike.

The NSW Crime Commission is attempting to seize the property and last week The Sunday Telegraphrevealed that their legal confiscation efforts had resulted in apparently bringing Sharrouf back to life.

Counter-terrorism authorities are now investigating telephoned death threats made by a person claiming to be Sharrouf to someone in Sydney over the current legal proceedings.

While Sharrouf lived in the property and called it home before his departure, it was purchased by friends in his inner circle, among them the slain standover man Joe Antoun, who was gunned down on his Strathfield doorstep in December 2013.

The paper-owner of the property, a main target of the Crime Commission’s legal proceedings, is one of Antoun’s relatives.

Law enforcement officials have long been wary about making a declaration on Sharrouf’s fate, though some believe he is very much alive. The phone call to Sydney has come to signify a breakthrough in efforts to locate him.

One well-placed law enforcement official said several warrants remained active for his arrest in the event that he is captured by partner agencies or allied forces operating in the region. He is also the subject of an Interpol “Red Notice”, the official said.

The drone strike that targeted Sharrouf almost certainly killed his compatriot Mohamed Elomar but, in general, proving any death in the war-torn nation was a difficult task, the official said, pointing to recent reports about the death of Sharrouf’s wife Tara Nettleton.

Nettleton’s family and lawyers have stated publicly that they have been told she died last year in hospital because of medical complications, but no hard evidence has emerged proving the death, the official said.

The process of validating such information can be difficult. Aside from family confirmation, confirming a death in Syria relies on partner agencies and circumstantial indicators, including contacts back to Australia.
