KARL Stefanovic has opened up for the first time about his shock split saying he has failed as a father and a husband.

There was no cavalier Karl as he talked about the pain and burden the separation with his wife of 21 years Cassandra Thorburn, has had on his family.

“For me personally I would definitely have failures in a husband sense and hope that I can rectify my failures as a Dad,” Karl said.

“I hope I can try and rebuild whatever has happened in the past and try and make the most of what I can do with them in the future.”

The 42-year-old moved out of the family home he shared with his wife and their three children last September.

“She is an amazing woman,” Karl said of his estranged wife.

“It’s a real burden emotionally for both people breaking up after a long and successful marriage.

“Life is life. People make mistakes. People have break ups. People mostly try to do their best and sometimes they fail.

“I think that we will work through it as best we can.”

Speaking to Page 13 while in Melbourne for an exclusive Today show lunch at Rockpool, Karl said he was refreshed after a seven week break.

The 42-year-old father said his primary focus moving into 2017 was his children, Jackson, Ava and River.

“It’s not their fault,” he said. “For me I just want to be there for my kids as much as I can.

“It’s not easy on anyone and the priority has to be on the children in any situation.

“For me the only issue was the burden of paparazzi around my family in the initial months. That is regrettable, that is hard to explain to a kid and I think it is awful for kids.”

Karl laughed off scurrilous rumours he is dating Delta Goodrem, saying the glossies would next be linking him to newly single Kylie Minogue.

Despite what the women’s mags would lead you to believe, Karl said he spent his holiday spending quality time with his children.

He later escaped to Aspen to hang out with another recent bachelor, James Packer.

Stefanovic camped at the Crown mogul’s Bondi apartment following his split.

He said they didn’t powwow too much about the private stuff in the celebrity ski mecca, despite both having gone through high-profile splits last year, Packer with pop diva Mariah Carey.

But he did say Packer has never been better.

“I was fortunate enough to see James when I was overseas,” Karl said. “He is a great mate of mine but we don’t really ever talk about that stuff.

“He is in great shape though and watch out, he is on the way back the big fella.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if he ends up running the world.”
