JackJumpers fan wins signed jersey for iconic shot

When The Mercury opened its competition asking for reproductions of Jack McVeigh’s incredible shot on the buzzer that clinched the JackJumpers road to Championship victory- we had no idea we’d be asking “who recreated who”.

Basketball fanatic and Claremont resident Brady “Boomer” Bluett was only 9 years old when he made an eerily similar half court shot at a critical moment in a game last year playing for Glenorchy’s under 12 side.

10-year-old Brady comes from a family of JackJumpers supporters and members and has been a massive basketball fan for almost half of his life.

“I was a member this year so we watched all the games,” Brady said.

Brady was “pumped” when his Mum Rachel Bluett told him he’d won the Mercury’s recreation competition despite his epic shot occurring almost a year before McVeigh’s three-pointer- at last years Mid Winter Classic Competition held in Launceston.

Brady has had a brush with basketball idol McVeigh, as he plays with the same club as McVeigh’s younger brother.

Brady intends to pursue basketball and as a young superstar he has been engaged with clinics and has already been selected for the Tasmanian basketball squad – he practises almost everyday at his home court.

Brady said to pass on the message to the JackJumpers that he is “available”. He is a point guard.

For his shooting efforts Brady was presented with a JackJumpers jersey signed by the whole team.

The jersey will be framed and displayed- although there are disagreements about the location.

“It’s going up in my room,” Brady said after his Dad suggested it might go into the recreation room.
