Sydney clearly hasn’t got the memo summer is over, with the city sweltering through an unexpected heatwave over the weekend.

Temperatures soared to a scorching 35C despite it being mid-March, transforming Bondi Beach into a scene straight out of peak summer.

Claudia Hampton, 30, and Casey Lynn, 29, couldn’t resist a perfect beach day on Sunday, joining the crowds of families, friends and Nippers seeking relief from the relentless heat.

“It’s been a really hot, long summer, and it’s just continuing,” Ms Hampton said.

“It’s a non-negotiable to be at the beach today.

“I’m just stoked that it feels like a never-ending summer, I’m not looking forward to daylight savings, because I’m loving this weather.”

David Hannan and his son, Jacob, were also making the most of the heat at Bondi.

“We’ve been loving the weather,” Mr Hannan said.

“This guy (Jacob) has been boogie boarding all morning. His brother’s been with Nippers. All their mates are here. They’re having a great time.”

While beachgoers embraced the summer-esque conditions, authorities issued warnings about the ongoing heatwave.

NSW Ambulance Chief Superintendent Steve Vaughan warned severe heatwave conditions may persist across metropolitan Sydney in the coming week.

“I urge people in those areas to stay hydrated, keep cool,” he said.

“Check in on those more vulnerable and more susceptible to the heat.”

While Sydney’s maximum temperature is expected to drop to just 23C on Monday, the reprieve from the heat is set to be short-lived.

The Bureau of Meteorology predicts the mercury will slowly rise again throughout the week before hitting 30C on Thursday.

During hot weather, authorities are urging residents to stay informed, stay hydrated, and avoid peak heat.

People are also advised to keep homes cool, use air-conditioned public spaces, never leave children or pets in cars, and plan shelter and water for animals.

It’s also worthwhile having an emergency kit. with essentials like water, medication and chargers, on hand.
