A young Grovedale woman who assaulted her friend’s ex-boyfriend in the Geelong CBD said the act of violence was revenge.

Lolita Hogan, the victim’s ex-girlfriend and a third unamed person became involved in the violent altercation with a man and a woman outside the entrance of Geelong Westfield.

Hogan pleaded guilty to affray, but avoided a conviction in the Geelong Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

While members shoppers were walking in and out of Westfield, the ex-girlfriend rushed at the victim and punched him in the back of the head during the February 2020 incident.

The court heard Hogan ran in and also punched him in the head.

When a woman attempted to pull Hogan off the man, Hogan turned around and punched her in the head.

Hogan then punched her a second time and pulled her hair.

While a third co-accused became involved in the altercation with the man, the ex-girlfriend helped Hogan wrestle the woman.

Both of them grabbed the woman’s hair and swung her into a wall.

The male victim was left with a laceration on the back of his head which required stitches, while the woman said she sustained bruising.

When questioned by police, Hogan admitted they went looking for the man because of an earlier fight.

She added she was “just starting s---” because she was “upset about what he did to (her friend) in the past”.

“It was an overreaction. I’m not proud of it,” Hogan told officers.

Asked why she also assaulted the woman, Hogan said it was because the female victim was a “f------ b---- too”.

Her lawyer said Hogan had been “hanging around the wrong crowd and it was in this context that this offending occurred”.

“It’s awful offending. She knows what she did was wrong and she accepts responsibility for her part,” he said.

Magistrate Ann McGarvie said it would have been “horrible” for members of the public to witness “a group ganging up on another couple and assaulting them”.

Ms McGarvie placed Hogan on a good behaviour bond, meaning she cannot reoffend for six months or risk being resentenced.
