Part of a Surfers Paradise high-rise has surrendered to the worsening weather as Cyclone Alfred continues its beeline for the coast.
Chunks of stone rained down from the rooftop of the One apartment building, smashing a guard rail and leaving a pile of debris across the carpark about 1pm on Thursday.
It’s understood no one was injured in the collapse, with neighbours reportedly alerted by a “big bang” as the rubble fell.
Neighbour Peter Gibberson recalled the moment he heard the debris fall from the building.
“I was on my balcony having a look out here and I heard an object come off the building and a big bang, so I came to check it out,” he said.
“There is rubble and debris everywhere.
“Something came loose from the Carlton building as well as the winds picking up. I thought I’d come down and make sure everyone’s OK.”
Darren Rielly posted the destruction to Facebook with the caption. “One building in Surfers Paradise has started to fall apart”.
Concerned friends commented under the photos, Melissah Gillespie said “Not good. See what the next few days bring.”
Suzanne Bartholomew added “That’s not a good sign”.
