The Gold Coast school that recorded the highest NAPLAN result at both primary and secondary levels says its success is more about teamwork than homework.
In an independent analysis of newly released 2022 results for Year 5 and Year 9, Mudgeeraba’s Somerset College recorded the best primary results of any school in the city with an average of 540.0 across the five test subjects.
Its secondary students also came out on top with an average result of 637.2.
Headmaster Craig Bassingthwaighte said the extraordinary academic achievement was a result of the college’s emphasis on working to every child’s needs during school hours as opposed to packing on more pressure with after-school classes.
“The most important thing for us is that our students feel comfortable doing this test under these test conditions,” he said.
“We don’t want them to get a shock, so we do train them and at some stage we’ll give them a trial that replicates the test.”
The Southport School’s primary students came in close second with an average score of 539.4, while A B Paterson College in Arundel recorded the third best regional primary school result at 537.2.
“I’m really grateful to be in a school with very high marks,” Piper Millar, 10, a Year 5 student at Somerset said.
With the 2023 NAPLAN set to begin later in March, Somerset students have already begun their preparation for the tests.
“My weakness is maths so I study hard for that and my teachers are so supportive,” Piper said.
Year 9 student Abhiraj Sarmah, 13, said while it was important to study hard for NAPLAN, he understood that the test was more about gauging current performance and areas of improvement.
“The best part is that you can see your progress visually, so it helps me set a goal – like I want to get to this band this year,” he said.
“It’s just a good way to see your progress over the years, from year three to my last year now and how much you’ve improved,” fellow Year 9 student Savannah Walker added.
All Saints Anglican School in Merrimac recorded the second best secondary result with an average score of 621.6, while A B Paterson College recorded third best with an average score of 618.8.

To determine how each school performed in 2022, the scores for all five test subjects for the student cohort (Year 5 or Year 9) were combined and the average found.
Special schools, schools with fewer than 20 students enrolled, and schools that did not report any results for NAPLAN subjects were excluded from the analysis.
The figures were independently compiled from the Federal Government’s MySchool website.
