She has one of the most familiar voices on the Gold Coast, but residents will see a new side of radio personality Emily Jade O'Keeffe when she takes a turn on the tele.
Ms O'Keeffe, who co-hosts the breakfast show on 1029 Hot Tomato, will be temporarily taking over as 7 News Gold Coast weather and lotto presenter from Liz Cantor while she is on maternity leave.
While the radio star said she felt “nervous” returning to TV presenting after almost two decades, she would be learning as much as she could by shadowing Ms Cantor.
“The one thing Liz has said is that even when she’s on maternity leave she’ll send me the surf report,” she said.
“The other thing she told me was not to trust technology … because when I used to do the weather it was always in studio and we didn’t go out as much.
“Liz said make sure to take photos of everything because if there’s something wrong with the Wi-Fi or the email at least you’ve got it on your phone or on paper.”
The two women have known each other for 15 years and Ms Cantor said it was exciting to have a close friend support her.
“Emily was one of the first people I told I was pregnant because we had our sons really close together,” she said.
“Basically she asked me, ‘Who’s going to cover your maternity leave? Can I do it?’ and I said, ‘Gosh that’s a good idea, let me talk to Seven about it’.
“It’s just nice that we’re friends and I knew Emily previously had on-air experience with Steve — what a good turn of events for her to come back and read with him.”
It will be a reunion for 7 News Gold Coast presenter Steve Titmus and Ms O'Keeffe, who worked alongside each other on Tasmanian TV around 25 years ago.
“When Emily did the weather in Tassie she left and disappeared … and I always wondered if one day Emily might do the weather again and we would be reunited,” Mr Titmus said.
“Bingo, here we are.
“I think it’s wonderful that there’s two people who had worked together 25 years ago, and then get to work together again.”
