A truck driver is recovering after he fell asleep at the wheel on the M1, causing havoc for motorists.

Police and fire crews were called after the truck crashed on the M1 northbound close to the Mudgeeraba exit at 12.45am on Wednesday.

A Gold Coast police spokesman said the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel and veered off the side of the road. The driver was not injured in the crash.

The incident caused havoc for early morning commuters, with authorities still working to clear the incident as daylight broke.

Elanora resident Nathan Rogers, who was on his way to Helensvale for work, said he moved only 100 metres in 15 minutes.

“Six of my colleagues were stuck in it as well,” he said.

It was the second major accident on the motorway within hours. A collision between a car and a ute southbound near the Smith St exit at about 7.25pm saw a 32-year-old Nerang woman taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition with head and chest injuries. A 34-year-old man, also from Nerang, suffered upper limb injuries.

The police Forensic Crash Unit are investigating the cause of the accident.
