Firefighters and Gold Coast City Council banded together to battle a raging rubbish fire at a Gold Coast tip, which produced large plumes of smoke over parts of the city.
The big blaze at Stapylton Waste and Recycling Centre, which was reported to authorities just before 6.20pm on Monday, stretched about 100x50 metres, and took hours to extinguish.
About five firefighting crews and Gold Coast City Council tackled the fire on Rossmanns Rd, a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said.
Firefighters did not leave the tip until about 11pm, after the fire was finally doused.
It’s not clear what caused the fire to ignite, but it has not been deemed suspicious in nature.
A spokeswoman for the council said the cause of the landfill fire was “unknown”.
The council helped by “pushing the burnt material to a safe area, dousing it with water and monitored to ensure it did not reignite”.
“There is minor infrastructure damage but the centre returned to normal operations Tuesday morning,” the spokeswoman said.
“The City reminds residents to use caution and follow instructions when placing items in your waste or recycling bins.
“Products such as paint thinners, any types of batteries, including car batteries, and other flammable items can rub together and create a spark.”
The council advised residents batteries can be disposed at dedicated waste and recycling centres at Helensvale and Reedy Creek, and soon at Merrimac and Molendinar.
