Mermaid’s iconic big yellow ball has been craned out and lifted to safety after ex-tropical cyclone Alfred swung a bogey the mini golf course’s way.
With Putt Putt Mermaid Beach’s landmark big yellow golf ball getting knocked right off its tee over the weekend, general manager Collette Harvey said as of Tuesday he was getting it ready to be restationed back overlooking the Gold Coast Highway.
“Cyclone Alfred took a swing and didn’t miss,” Ms Harvey said.
“He’s been craned around to the back of the clubhouse, and then he will be getting repaired and getting prepped so our soldier can be put back up on the highway so people know where they are again.”
The giant smiling ball has been integral to the suburb for nearly five decades, often a focal point for locals, providing direction to motorists.
“I think everyone’s a bit lost since he fell down,” she said. “But the soldier will be back up in no time.”
Ms Harvey said the Putt Putt mascot without a name got “a bit of a bump to the head”, with only minor repairs required.
“He needs a new tee to sit on and unfortunately someone graffitied him during the night – so he'll get a full paint job too,” Ms Harvey said.
“Rest assured, we are on to it, and we will be getting him fixed up as soon as possible and he will be back on the highway soon.”
Putt Putt Mermaid Beach reopens Wednesday.
