Police and firefighters investigating cause of fierce factory fire on Motorway Circuit at Ormeau early on Wednesday morning

Police and firefighters are trying to determine how a fire which ignited inside an Ormeau business, closing a local road, started.

Police and firefighters have been working to determine how a blaze ignited inside a business in an industrial area on the Gold Coast early on Wednesday morning.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) firefighters were still working to identify and douse hot spots at the Motorway Circuit, Ormeau business this morning, about three hours after the fire was reported to authorities.

Emergency services were called after smoke was reported coming from the building – described as a factory – just after 3.20am on Wednesday.

“On arrival thick smoke was coming from inside the building with visibility affected inside and outside the building resulting in the road having to be closed while the fire was extinguished,” a Gold Coast police spokeswoman said.

“Early investigations lean to a truck inside the premises catching fire for unknown reasons.

“A number of people at the scene (fire service officers) were treated by emergency services (Queensland Ambulance Service) for smoke inhalation.”

A QFES spokeswoman said it was unclear how the fire began but confirmed it was linked to the truck.

It’s understood the business was closed at the time and the truck switched off.

Police investigations have been ongoing to determine how the fire started and if it is suspicious. QFES will also be investigating.

It’s believed the fire and firefighting efforts led to some sort of chemical run-off and the Department of Environment and Science has also been on scene.
